Murcar Links

Scotland - Murcar Golf Links

Established in 1909, Murcar Links adjoins Royal Aberdeen to its south side. It was designed by Archie Simpson, who was the Professional at Royal Aberdeen at the time. James Braid and George Smith both advised on alterations and refinements to the course in the 1930s, but it is essentially the same layout that is in play today. It frequently features in the Top 100 courses in the UK. Not for the beginner or the faint hearted, Murcar Links is a par 71 natural Championship links, which represents a truly challenging test of golf. To play it requires every shot in the book and if the wind is up, a few more besides! To quote Peter Alliss it is, without doubt, a Hidden Gem; and Paul Lawrie, 1999 Open Champion, says "Murcar Links is as fine a links course as you could wish to play".

It is located on a classic stretch of links land with huge sand dunes, crumpled fairways, whins, burns and heather. There are some magnificent views from the elevated tees across the North Sea and to Aberdeen. It’s a beautifully rugged course with lots of natural appeal. The fairways are sometimes cruelly tight and the ball has a habit of bouncing off the knolls and into vicious rough. When the wind blows, Murcar Links can be an absolute brute. Whatever the weather, this is a must-play golf course. It’s tremendous entertainment all the way round.
